UPI May Stop Working for Some Users – How to Avoid Disruptions
HIGHLIGHTS
-
Banks and payment providers must update databases regularly to prevent issues.
-
Inactive mobile numbers linked to UPI will be deactivated.
-
Users should ensure their registered number is active to avoid disruptions.
New UPI Rules Coming into Effect
Starting April 1, new rules will change how mobile numbers linked to UPI are managed. If your bank-registered mobile number remains inactive for a long time, your UPI ID may stop working. This means you won’t be able to make payments or receive money.
Banks and payment service providers (PSPs) must update their databases regularly using the Mobile Number Revocation List (MNRL) or Digital Intelligence Platform (DIP). This will prevent errors caused by outdated or reassigned mobile numbers.
What Happens to Inactive Mobile Numbers?
If a mobile number is unused for three months (no calls, messages, or data usage), it will be deactivated by the telecom provider. After 90 days, the number may be assigned to a new user.
If this happens, and your UPI ID is linked to an inactive number, it will be automatically deactivated to prevent security risks.
How to Keep Your UPI Active
To avoid any disruptions in UPI payments:
-
Ensure your registered mobile number is active by making occasional calls, sending texts, or using mobile data.
-
If you change your mobile number, update it with your bank immediately to avoid losing access to your UPI ID.
Additional Security Updates
Changes are also being made to the "Collect Payment" feature in UPI to reduce fraud. Now, this feature will be available only to verified merchants. For personal transactions, the request amount will be limited to Rs 2,000.
